Explaining About Supported Independent Living


Support for Independent Living is a 24-hour support service for impaired people with high accessibility needs, helping them to live independently and improve their skills with daily support and supervision.

Participants can access this service whether they live independently in their own home or a communal apartment.

Independent-supported living in Melbourne is one of several home and living support options, including:

  • Specialised housing for impaired people
  • Medium-term accommodation
  • Short-term accommodation
  • Home modifications
  • Young adults in senior housing
  • Individualised living options (non-participants)
  • Supportive care (living with a non-participant)

SIL Include:

Subject to NDIS funding criteria, support for NDIS independent living in Melbourne includes support for:

  • Personal care
  • Skills such as meal preparation, cooking, cleaning and daily routines.
  • Assistance with behaviour support plans.
  • Improved social skills
  • Supervision, personal safety and security
  • Administration of medications for participants
  • Physician visits.
  • Access to the community on a regular or irregular basis.
  • Personal employment.
  • Travel to and from home as desired by the participant (attending hydrotherapy sessions, visiting family and friends outside the home).

Things Not Included in the SIL Program

Independent-supported living near Melbourne does not include daily living expenses such as rent, food, lodging, meals and activities. It also does not include capital expenses for participant housing.‍

End of SIL Supported Living Application

This support (Supported Independent Living Assistance — Permanent Exit from Housing) is for participants who permanently leave their housing due to health or safety concerns for themselves or others for participants who need to permanently leave their housing due to health or safety concerns for themselves or others.

This assistance can be claimed weekly through the portal under certain conditions:

  • You and the participant (or his or her proxy) must agree on a timeframe for notification of the unplanned departure.
  • If the participant gives notice of early retirement and leaves due to this, you can only claim for the remainder of the notice period.

A formal service contract is recommended, but other written agreements are also valid. You can only claim once per 28 days or up to a maximum of four times per week per participant during the plan period.

This endorsement is subject to the rules outlined in the NDIS Pricing and Price Limits section. You must choose either weekly or hourly SIL support, but not both.
